Life
Born in 1985, Matthew Miles took up playing the flute at a young age. Growing up in Queensland, Australia, it wasn't until he took up the saxophone in secondary school that he started to develop a love of jazz and improvisation. Encouraged by inspirational saxophone teachers and inspired by his parents' extensive collection of jazz records it wasn't long before he was playing with local Big Bands and Jazz Quartets in and around Brisbane. During his school years he was lucky enough to travel to Canada and the United States, performing and attending jazz workshops including learning with Loren Schoenberg at the Lincoln Jazz Centre in New York.
Inspired by his travels, Matthew moved to London in 2003 where he studied jazz and composition at Goldsmiths college in London. During his time in London he had the good fortune of learning from some incredible saxophonists including Jean Toussaint, Julien Siegel, Tim Garland & Dave O’Higgins. Now based in Kent, Matthew is a regular on the Kent jazz scene running his 8 piece composers collective ‘Work8hop’ and performing regularly with the Frances Knight Quartet and The Ginger Bennett Quintet.
